They're creepy and they're kooky...

This week, with the approaching Halloween holiday coming up, I've had the theme song from The Addams Family show in my head. I'm passing that on to all of you now... maybe. Anyway, in light of the theme, we are celebrating all things scary in the Library! If you are a fan of terror in books of movies, this is the place to be. We have several on display for you up here, and many, many more on the shelves. If you aren't sure where to start, we have plenty of recommendations. I must admit that when it comes to scary, I'm a lightweight. Still, every once in a while, everyone loves a really creepy story. Some of the best I've read, I'll share with you..
"The turn of the screw" by Henry James. This is a short story so you can read it in one day, but is highly creepy and borders on terror. The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova is an excellent novel about the man whom all vampire stories are based off of, and it is realistic enough to make it believable. This book definitely kept me up at night. Another book that you may have missed and by far the scariest book I've ever read is The Oath by Frank Peretti. This one, don't read late at night at all! Peretti writes realistic fiction, not sci-fi or horror, so the happenings here are things that we see everyday and could very well happen to us. I think this must be what makes it so horrifying. And of course, we have several selections by The Master of terror himself, Edgar Alan Poe. Along the same lines, if movie viewing is your thing there are some good scary films here as well. We have some Alfred Hitchcock to keep you in suspense with The 39 steps, Jamaica Inn or even his illustrious Psycho. We are also proud to feature the incomparable Vincent Price in The Abominable Dr. Phibes and Poe's The House of Usher. And of course, we have numerous Stephen King and Dean Koontz books.
If you come up to the Library in costume on Halloween day, we'll have chocolate for you! Have a safe and fun, mysterious and spooky Halloween.
