Women's History Month

March is officially here and with it comes a great desire in me to see spring come as well. Yet, looking outside I find that the gray skies and frozen earth linger on. Rather than dwell on the cold and dismal world outside, let's begin the month by celebrating something the amazing and inspiring. March is Women's History Month and with that, I'd like to acknowledge some amazing women and inspiring works that are going on around us.
Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton must be acknowledge in their tireless efforts to see equality achieved for women. A driving force behind women's Right to Vote, these ladies as well as countless others stood up against the tide of oppression and found a voice for all womankind. Their efforts can be seen in two amazing films we have at the library, Not for Ourselves Alone (directed by Ken Burns) and the new HBO drama Iron Jawed Angels (starring Hilary Swank, Patrick Dempsey, Julia Ormond and many others). Both of these films get a 5 star rating from our staff.
A few women who inspire us... Lucy Stone, Mother Teresa, Lucy Parsons, Corrie ten Boom, Abigail Adams, Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, Joni Earickson Tada, Audrey Hepburn, Princess Sultana, Helen Keller, Susan G. Komen and yes, Fran Drescher. Each of these women have lived through horrendous things or affected great social change and their lives are an inspiration to the strength and character of women. Though her first book was amazingly moving, Fran Drescher's second book Cancer Schmancer is funny and a true tale of the spirit behind Susan G. Komen's Race for the Cure movement. It's not Breast Cancer Awareness month, but there is something every one of you can to do be a part of and help in this movement to promote women's health and survival just from your home computer. Try this website, which allows you to click a button and their sponsors will donate a free mammogram for every click. You can click as often as you want or sign up for daily reminders to do so. There are many ways to get involved and find out more. If you are interested click here, here, here or even here.
Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, Lucy Parsons and Lucy Stone were all advocates for labor, worker's rights, a society free of war, and women having the courage to know their voice and make it heard. Any of their writings or works about them are astounding, inspiring, and awakening. These are truly women to admire. What you will find when you read about these women is they not only changed history, but lived in an extraordinary time filled with revolutionaries and people willing to stand up for what they believe. Books about these women are filled with many others who are worth reading about.
For more books or movies on amazing women, stop by the Library and check out our Women's History Month display.
