An amazing journey

This week's film, The Way, is one not to be missed.  It is a beautiful story of a father and son finding each other on a journey to discover who they are.  The film opens with a very identifiable disagreement between father, Martin Sheen, and his son (director of the film, Emilio Estevez) in which the heart of their argument is that they just don't understand each other.  Estevez's character wants to quit his job and leave for Spain to take a 500 mile walk called the Camino de Santiago.  The trek for many is a spiritual one, and way of finding oneself, finding peace with the world, and just what Estevez hopes to accomplish.  Not understanding the logic or rationality of such a journey, the father argues with his son and they separate in anger.
The beauty of this storyline begins when Estevez dies in an accident before ever making it to Spain.  The father, lost in regret and grief, decides to take the trek himself in hopes of connecting with or understanding in part some of who his son was.  Beginning a journey of faith, armed with his heartache and his son's ashes to spread along the 500 mile trek, this film explores the foundations of what is connected within us all, the joy that can be found in moments, in the most unusual characters or places, and the peace that can happen when we stop even for just one minute to look around and breathe.  Please come take the journey with us this evening. (6:30 p.m. in the Science Building)

And of course some trivia about the film just because I find it fascinating...
Unlike many films, this one was not made from a book, a play, or a screenplay that was floating around.  The interesting moment behind it is that Martin Sheen and his grandson, Estevez's son, hiked the Camino de Santiago themselves.  The journey was so significant and life-changing that Sheen wanted to let people know about it.  He proposed to make a documentary about the trail and those who journey on it.  After talking with Estevez about how to connect the emotional and spiritual aspects of the experience, they came up with this story.  Some of the moments captured in the film were Sheen's own or his grandson's (who married a women they met on the trek).

This is a great film and we hope that you will come enjoy this experience with us.
