Black it out

A little more about poetry....
AS we continue to read and share poems with you throughout this month, take a moment and think about the poems or find one of your own.  As the Academy of American Poets' Chancellor, Naomi Shihab Nye said, “When you live in a rapidly moving swirl, you can only view your surroundings with a glance. Poetry requires us to slow down, to take time to pause”. And this is so true.  Your lives are incredibly full.  There are days when I feel like every minute is packed with one thing or another until, collapsing at the end of the day, I realize that I still missed so much.
Poetry requires a pause.
Writing poetry requires an even greater pause.
Now, now...I know many of you are already hesitating.  Are they really going to ask us to write?  Whatever.  I'm out.

Even those of us who love poetry rarely have the courage to write it ourselves, much less share it.  However, there is a form of poetry creation that takes no writing skills whatsoever and is quite fun to do.  What is it?
It's called Black Out Poetry.
You simply take a page from a book, find some words that say something to you, and cross out all of the rest.  It can be simple or fancy.  You can create art or just say something.

Here's one example of just such a simple poem, and yet the words are powerful.
So, for our first National Poetry Month event, this Wednesday, we will be hosting a Black Out Poetry workshop.
That means that all you have to do is show up.  We will have all the supplies.  We will have plenty of inspiration and other students/community members designs around the Library.
We will have good treats.  So come and join in.  It is in the Library on Wednesday, April 8th from 6:30-8:30 p.m.  You don't have to come for any particular time.  Just show up, make a poem or two, hang out and have a good time.
For more inspiration, here's a few more fun examples of Black Out Poetry.  Check our our Pinterest board, or some of the student poems made at last April's workshop.
