A First
Welcome to the first of hopefully many posts on the TVCC Library's new blog page. We really wanted this page to be a great resource to share some of our thoughts as well as what is new and happening at the library. In addition, it provides us with a place to add some new features like "Featured Author of the Month," "Teacher's Picks" (where a TVCC Staff member lets us in on their favorite reads), new books in the Library, new videos, helpful Reasearch Tips and anything else exciting going on.
Because it's Fall, and with that comes the desire for comfort... warm fires, steaming mugs of deliciously scented beverages, finally having a need to break out those soft and cozy sweaters, and smelling those wonderful scents of baking apples and cinnamon, pumpkin and nutmeg. For me, that meeting of comfort and warmth ideally involves a warm blanket and a nice thick book. So on that lovely thought, I wanted to share with you our featured author of the month....
I was tempted to dedicate this month to a very cherished author who passed away a couple of weeks ago, Madeleine L'Engle. Her books have been the source of many comforting and inspiring moments for me. Favorite book and always a good read by her? The Young Unicorns. Despite the title, it's not one of her sci-fi books. That's your bonus recommendation for this month.
Back to it...
The Featured Author of the Month is ... Jodi Picoult.
She writes fiction books about difficult subjects that are absolutely astounding and challenging. She does not draw conclusions for you but gives you all the information on the subject to decide for yourself how you feel. Perfect for delving into on a quiet afternoon, or escaped from your not-so-quite world.
In Nineteen Minutes, she explores a school shooting, what leads up to those tragic minutes, and what follows.
In My Sister's Keeper, she tackles the hardship of parents whose child has a rare form of leukemia and their choice to have a second child in the hopes that she will be a genetic match for the first.
With Keeping Faith, she explores the emotional journey of divorce, custody battles, and a child's response to the family turmoil.
Find these and several other of her works in the Library today and enjoy!
