Save Me!
More often than most of us would care to admit, we have committed the devastating error of not saving that paper we are typing and then something happens. You've just lost it all. Well, for those of you who've experienced this, you know just how frustrating it can be. Then, you vow never to let this happen again, mentally preparing yourself to Save, Save, Save in the future. Yet, inevitably that determination lapses and you forget. Well, here's a couple of tips to do in case you find yourself in this predicament as well as to prevent it:
Prevention
In Microsoft Office Word 2007, there is an "auto save" feature that will automatically create a back-up every so many minutes without you ever clicking Save. To activate this either on your personal computer or a lab computer, click the M.O. button (circle in the top left corner), then click on Word Options. Under the Advanced tab in the Save section is the "Always create backup" option. By making sure this is selected, Office will automatically save your file. If it is lost, by following the same steps, M.O. button, Word Options, and then Save, you can find the AutoRecover file location, that will show you where to find it.
Recovery
Both Word 2007 and previous versions have an autorecovery feature in case Word itself shuts down or locks up. In order to access this, Word must be closed. Then reopen it and any recovered files should appear. If they do not, click on the Microsoft Office Button and then Open. If your file does not appear here, type in the following...
For Windows Vista
%userprofile%\AppData\Microsoft\Word\*.asd
For Microsoft Windows 2003 or XP
%userprofile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\*.asd
This should show you the files that are saved. Click on the one titled "Auto Recovery save of (your file)" and it should open.
If you are working on a campus lab computer, the best option is to save it yourself due to their tendency to shut down in the middle of your work. If this occurs, Microsoft cannot help you.
