Step up to the Plate!
As promised...here's the details about our next contest event. Spring is finally here. Baseball season is in full swing. The TVCC Library is joining with libraries all across the US, in conjunction with the American Library Association and the National Baseball Hall of Fame to promote the sixth annual Step Up to The Plate campaign. Inspired by our love for all things baseball, this event is meant to honor the sport and encourage your use of the Library. This year, Step Up to the Plate connects generations by exploring baseball’s more than 150-year history through topics like famous baseball families and historical baseball franchises. Join with us in playing.
How to play... Go to the SUTTP site and download the playbook. People of all ages are encouraged to use the print and electronic resources available at their library to answer a series of trivia questions designed for their age group (10 and under, 11-13, 14-17 and 18 and over). You will then be on your way to answering questions about famous baseball families and historical baseball franchises. Questions are available in both English and Spanish.
When...Now! You can begin at any time. Submit your entries in the mail, via email or online. Final date to submit is September 1st, so you have all summer to get your answers turned in.
The prizes are... The grand-prize winner will receive a trip for two to Cooperstown, N.Y., to attend the Hall of Fame’s World Series Gala in October 2011. The prize will include admission to
the Hall of Fame, a behind-the-scenes tour of the museum, library and archives, roundtrip
coach airfare within the United States, and two nights’ hotel accommodation in
Cooperstown, N.Y. (double occupancy). Additionally, the winner will also receive a
family membership to the Hall of Fame. Several prizes will be given (drawn randomly from all entries) that include some very cool baseball memorabilia and autographed items. Just by entering, you can win prizes for your library too.
How to find the answers...Use your Library. You can look online, use any of the TVCC Library databases. We also have a great variety of books and the fabulous Baseball DVD series by director Ken Burns. There are more sources to help in your research too. The Baseball Hall of Fame http://www.baseballhall.org has a great library where they keep clippings and information on just about everyone. If you are stumped, ask us for help.
This is just to get you started. We'll be carrying over our baseball theme throughout the season and over the summer with some fun events planned for later. Keep checking here for the latest news.
