The Help
This book is an absolute favorite read for the summer. The Help by Kathryn Stockett has been on my "to read" list for over a year now. The last month I've been doing a lot of driving so I checked out the audiobook version of this novel. First, let me say that audiobooks are great! Sometimes the narration is simply fantastic and regardless of the story, the reader can keep you excited all the way through the novel. The Help was recorded with not one, but three woman whose voices truly bring the characters of this novel to life. Very enjoyable! Although regarding the book, I think Kathryn Stockett's characters need little help being brought to life. This is a story about the deep South in the 1960's during the breaking of the Civil Rights Movement. As recent college graduate, Miss Skeeter finds herself in a world where women are not expected to contribute anything to society but children and going to college is supposed to accomplish little more than to get oneself a husband. In her early twenties, she is looked upon like an "old maid" who will never amount to anything because she is not married nor is she looking for a husband but rather a job in publishing. To satisfy her desires to be a writer, Miss Skeeter decides to write a book about the "help", the black women who wait on and serve the white folks. Life from the point of view of each of these amazing women is quite different. The book in its entirety is funny, charming, and wonderful. The Library has the book, the audiobook, and we are eagerly awaiting the August premier of the movie. A definite four-star recommendation for your summer reading list.
