November movies...
The Book Theif by Markus Zusak - We absolutely loved this book. Set in Germany just prior to WWII, the book follows 9 year-old Liesel who has been taken from her home to live with a new family. She has just stolen her first book even though she has not yet learned to read. The tragedy of her life and the chaos of the world around her are all brought into focus through the books that she steals and then reads. The mystery of where the story is going is intense and constant as the narrator of Liesel's story is Death itself. Starring none other than the amazing Geoffrey Rush, this is sure to be a great film.
Mandela: Long walk to Freedom - Okay, so the life and work of Nelson Mandela...who wouldn't want to watch. But, Mandela played by Idris Elba? Need we say more?
Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card - And for all of our sci-fi fans out there, the cult classic first book in the fanatically popular Ender's series is finally here on screen. Releasing November 1st, this incredible story of a young boy, Ender Wiggin who is called upon to save the human race from an alien attack has captured readers for decades. If you haven't read it, you are definitely missing out on an amazing adventure with some pretty incredible characters.
And we would be remiss if we didn't mention Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins - the second book in the Hunger Games trilogy. As relations between Katniss and the men in her life come to a head, so does tension between her, the people of the districts, and the Capital. Finding herself back in the games, she once again has to fight for her life and that of Peta's in hopes of giving her family a future worth living.
December movies
August: Osage County by Tracy Letts - A true Southern family drama with loads of hilarity, more skeletons hiding in closets that we care to know about, shocks, twists, profanity, ridiculousness, and much more. Letts gives us an up-close and personal picture of what family dysfunction is all about. This play, winning the Pulitzer Prize for drama, is artfully crafted and a fantastic read. The film, which we can hardly contain our excitement for, has a phenomenal cast that are sure to bring to life all that makes this play great. With Julia Roberts, Ewan MacGregor, Meryl Streep, Benedict Cumberbatch, Juliette Lewis, Sam Shephard...and the list goes on. Seriously, how can you not want to watch this one?
And of course, the second installment in Peter Jackson's epic rendition of The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkein - Here, our band of misfits and closet heroes, as they continue on their journey will meet the dragon. Jackson's incredible ability to create beautifully crafted fantasy on screen is sure to continue in his sixth Tolkein adventure film. Now, we are talking about a dragon, but if he could create an army of the ghosts and wraiths, this is bound to be one fantastic dragon and more battle scenes to leaves us gripping our chairs, breathless.
Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit - Are you wondering, did you really just read Jack Ryan? Why yes, you did!! I know, I know, all of you Tom Clancy fans out their just did a little jig while reading those words. Well let me make your day even better, because yes, Clancy's most beloved character is back on the screen. Following the films that established his career, Hunt for the Red October, Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger, and Sum of all Fears, the mind reels that anyone but Harrison Ford and James Earl Jones could make this character any better. Well, director Kenneth Branaugh is revamping Clancy's later books by giving us young Jack Ryan (Chris Pine) as a new CIA agent, and we think he'll do it smashingly. Yes, Branaugh, Pine, Kevin Costner, Kiera Knightley, and just in time for Christmas!
