And all that Jazz

What is not to love about this year's National Poetry Month celebration at TVCC.  We have the incredible Lawson Inada coming to speak...and we are sooo excited.

In a joint effort with the TVCC English Department and the Library, we are putting on an evening that you will not want to miss.  It's going to be truly wonderful.  There will of course be poetry, because that's what this is all about.  So, we are bringing to our very special community a major award winning poet, scholar, former Professor of English at Southern Oregon University, and Oregon Poet Laureate from 2006-2010...the esteemable poet, Mr. Lawson Inada.
Inada's poetry is rich and beautiful and worthy of being shared in its own regard.  However, there is so much more that he has to share.
Lawson Inada was born in Fresno, California, the son of Japanese immigrants to the United States.  In 1942, as a result of Executive Order 9066, Inada and his family were sent to Japanese Internment camps where they were held during the war years.
Mr. Inada has dealt with the experiences of the camps and the legacy of that incarceration in many of his poems, which he will share with us.
Another defining effect of the camp experiences was Inadas discovery of jazz, the quintessential multicultural American music.  Inada went to New York to pursue a career as a jazz musician (the string bass was his instrument) before he turned to writing as his vocation.  But the music remains a constant in his life.
His poetry is infused with the rhythms and movement of jazz as well as the musicians he interacted with, such as the great Billie Holiday, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, and Theolonious Monk.  All of this, he will be sharing with us tonight as well.  And to make it even more amazing, Mr. Inada will be joined onstage by our very own Professor Joseph Jefferson and his jazz combo.

So you see, a little history, a little poetry, a little jazz...what's not to love.  Do not miss this incredible opportunity.  We will see you all there. Everyone is invited!  This event is free and open to the public.
